What if There is a Death of a Student or a Colleague?

by Carol Fleming (American Bedu) - 02/14/2010

"Living in Saudi one has to be prepared for all contingencies even if means what to do or how to go and pay respects at a funeral This article ealks you through the basics of Saudi customs."

Depending on what level of school is taught in Saudi Arabia, it still remains a tradition to announce anytime there has been a death of a student or an employee. The death notice will usually advise the name, particulars, when the body will be buried, and when guests can pay their condolences to the family.

In Saudi Arabia it is preferred that a Muslim be buried within 24 hours of his or her death. Immediately following the death there will be three days of mourning during which family and friends can come to the home to pay respects and condolences. Colleagues and teachers who knew the individual who passed away are expected to go and pay their respects to the home of the family. This time usually takes place between the last two prayers of the evenings. Men and women will be segregated at these functions.

Those who are in grieving and closest to the bereaved one will be sitting in chairs similar to a reception line. As one enters it is appropriate to shake the hands of the grieving family members and offer words of condolence. Do not feel compelled to stand and talk for a lengthy period as there is probably a line behind you. Say simple and sincere words while looking right into the eyes of the bereaved individual. After that, simply move on to the next available empty chair set out for visitors. Sit down and stay and pray with the others present for at least 20 minutes. After that period, you are free to leave if you wish.

Showing respect and courtesy to the bereaving family is equally as important as showing respect for the deceased.
