Teaching in Smaller Saudi Cities and Towns

by Carol Fleming - 06/09/2010

"Riyadh and Jeddah are not the only cities for teaching opportunities in Saudi Arabia. This article explores some of the advantages in accepting a teaching position in a smaller city or town in the Kingdom."

Riyadh and Jeddah are not the only opportunities for a teacher to acquire a position in Saudi Arabia either as a professor or an EFL teacher. There are schools and Universities in smaller cities and towns such as Al Jouf, Tabuk, Unaizah and others. Benefits a teacher may receive by accepting a position in a smaller or city or town include opportunities to become easier acquainted with students and their families. Additionally, accepting a teaching opportunity in a smaller city or town will allow a teacher to more fully experience the customs, traditions and culture of Saudi Arabia.

All large cities have the commonalities of standard restaurant chains, congested traffic, multiple large and modern shopping malls and an impersonal environment. Whereas in a smaller city or town, an expatriate teacher will be able to discover local restaurants which have been owned for generations by the same family; less traffic; local souks which will carry handmade handicrafts and other local items of interest; and become personally known to shopkeepers and others in the local community.

Accepting a position in a smaller city or town may not be for everyone. If the desire is to have more of a social life with greater choices, then Riyadh or Jeddah may be more suitable locations. However, that is not to say there cannot be a social life in a lesser populated environment. If anything, the expatriate community in a smaller city or town is usually closer knit due to the limited number of expatriates.
If an expatriate chooses to live on a compound there will be regular activities on the compound as well as local places of interest to explore and discover.

In regards to single female expatriates who elect to accept a position in a smaller city or town, it is suggested that she consider compound living as compared to a local apartment. This recommendation is suggested for her safety, security and comfort. Whether in a large or small city, a single female expatriate will be a subject of curiosity among local and other foreign expatriates. Furthermore, if a single female expatriate does not have a good grasp of the Arabic language additional challenges are presented for living in a “local” environment. Whereas on a compound, the single female expatriate does not have to worry about language barriers and timely responses for assistance or be concerned of unknown individuals knocking on an apartment door.

Prior to accepting a position, a professor or EFL teacher should conduct his or her own research about the area where the opportunity is available. When accepting a new opportunity, keep an open mind and be cognizant of local customs, culture and traditions.

Good and informative article. However, I wish you were able to shed more light on the challenges facing expatriates, both male and female, planning to work in the KSA. Keep up good job. Thank you.

Such informative articles should be written as a guide for those who cherish fears for and are reluctant to accept a job in the KSA. I think people working in the KSA should come forward to contribute on such forums and share their experience with the ones who are willing to work there. I appreciate the efforts of Carol Fleming for such a wonderful article and hope to read such a many article like this in the coming days.

Dear Carol, thanks for all your helpful articles. I would suggest you to give vent to your feelings as a worker in Saudi Arabia. What challenges does an employee especially a teacher face at his / her work place? This is very important to know because the person who is willing to move on to a new place of work feels that he / she will be in comforts in his / her new working environment owing to a very attractive remuneration package and all other facilities usually unaware of the challenges that lie ahead. What I want to say is he/she perhaps does not expect the unexpected situation especially the one who travels for the first time. One of my colleagues had to face such a horrible (this is what he had used the word when he was leaving back for his home country though he had more than 20 years teaching experience) experience. I think I have tried my level best to let you know what I want you to write about.

I would suggest that for further information on experiences in teaching in the Middle East region to also view the www.teachmideast.com web site too. For those who have expressed interest in teaching opportunities in Saudi Arabia, a teachsaudi.com recruiter will need to address those queries.

Thanks a lot Carol for sharing your experiences working with Arabs. For sure, some of the experiences are similar to the ones I have gained teaching for many years in Thailand. In fact, I would like to experience it than being told. Right now, I need to experience a new teaching environment like the smaller provinces of Saudi Arabia. Could you help to get me a teaching position in any part of KSA? Email: kevis02@yahoo.com; kevis02@gmail.com; Mobile +668 6782 4002, Thailand. Hear from you. Best regards. Christopher..........

Thank you for this informative article. I was sceptical about accepting work in one of the smaller cities, but I now aim to look for work in a smaller city.
