Iqama - Your lifeline in KSA

by Expatguru - 02/28/2012

"This article explains what an Iqama is and how important it is for expatriates working in Saudi Arabia"

The most important document an expatriate must possess at all times in Saudi Arabia is his ‘Iqama’. Iqama is nothing but a residence permit which is the sole legal document upon which everything else rests.

When you land in the kingdom, your passport would be taken away by your sponsor for his safe custody. You will be given a photocopy of your passport with your sponsor’s seal and signature which would be your temporary document till you get your iqama, which could be anywhere between 15 days to 3 months depending on various factors. The iqama is a small booklet which contains very important details about you. It is green in color for Muslims and dark brown for non-Muslims. In some parts of the kingdom, the booklet has been replaced with a magnetic card.
Every iqama has a unique identification number. I would advise all expats to memorize this as you would be very frequently using this in almost all transactions during your stay in the kingdom.

The iqama also has your photograph, your visa profession (not to be confused with your actual job title), your date of birth and the date of issue and expiry of the iqama. When your family joins you after a few months, it is mandatory for them too to have an iqama. Until very recently, the group photograph of the family (only wife and kids, without you) was stuck in another page of the iqama with their dates of birth. This practice has now been discontinued and all new and renewed iqamas are being issued individually to each person in the family.

You as well as your family members must always be in possession of the iqama. And by “possession”, I mean physically in your wallet not in your car dashboard or in your desk at work. Keep multiple photocopies of the iqama at several locations. In case of loss, the procedure for replacement is rather cumbersome, so you must take utmost care of this. Note that everything you do in the kingdom is linked to your iqama. You need this for opening or closing a bank account, for getting a driving license, for applying an exit/re-entry visa, for bringing your wife and kids into the kingdom, in the unfortunate event of you getting involved in an accident – just name it and everything is linked to your iqama. You are at a serious risk of being imprisoned in case you are caught without an iqama, as you would be treated as an illegal resident.

The iqama also needs to be shown at every security check post when you travel from one city to another and also when you enter the high-security zones such as western compounds as well as the industrial cities of Jubail and Yanbu.

Note that you are not supposed to have in your possession both your passport as well as iqama at the same time. Whenever you leave the kingdom, your iqama would have to be surrendered to your sponsor in lieu of your passport and it would be again exchanged upon your arrival.
The iqama is an extremely important document – as important as your passport. Expatriates must take utmost care not to lose or damage it during their tenure in the kingdom.

You mean we can't have our passports with us?

technically you can but for all practical matters no--they are afraid you might want to leave without their knowing==as if you could--since leaving also requires an exit visa--they only country in the world that I know of that requires and exit visa to actually leave the country--you are for purposes a prisoner as long as you are and until you decide to leave

If there are any teachers heading to the KSA, I would STRONGLY suggest that you ask for a multientry work visa for the year you are there. They issue these as this is what I have always had. You don't need a letter to leave the country. I use to hop on a plane and visit abroad on the weekends, without ANY LETTER. You are more FREE. Insist when neg your contract that you WANT THIS visa. And DONT ever accept a single entry work visa. This is one big mightmare. Your employer has no right to hold on to your passport. Tell them from the beginning; "if you cannot trust me to have my passport then dont employ me". There are hundreds of jobs for teachers, so be picky. Also, as an expat, it is a load of rot that the police will throw you in jail because you dont have an iqama. Never heard of that before and I am a veteran in this part of the world. Unfortunately, if you are from Pakistan or one of these countries, that maybe another story. The Saudis will never make a problem and arrest you if you do not have this document. That is laughable. Most of the time i never carry I.D with me. If you need to transfer money, no problem, just take your passport with you to Telemoney agents throughout the Kingdom) and they will transfer funds. As for securtiy points..just show your passport...that will do. If you are an expat from a Native English Speaking Country, it is easier for you..they dont question too much. If anyone wants any more points let me know, as I get sick and tired of reading on the net about information that is either sensationalized or just not true. Good luck.

im planning to teach in ksa a.s.a.p & am worried about those things,ok the embassy told me it's illagal for employers to hold onto ur passport, however it's commonly practiced. if my employer insists on not giving me a multi-entry visa, how do i "force" them to? coz i also plan to make trips around arabia whilst there.

@ Andrea - You can always negotiate with your employer to issue a multiple exit/reentry visa as part of your employment conditions. Note however, that this is valid only for six months and you need to keep it renewed each time. Whether you like it or not, you CANNOT have your passport as well as the iqama with you at the same time. The iqama is given in lieu of the passport which is always in custody of your sponsor, except when you leave the kingdom on vacation or on exit. @ JustMe, you don't get arrested if you do not have your iqama. But God forbid, if you meet with an accident or you are questioned at any of the innumerable checkposts and you do not have your iqama, then not only will you be arrested, you might also be deported. Your statement that "The Saudis will never make a problem and arrest you if you do not have this document. That is laughable. Most of the time i never carry I.D with me." shows that you are obviously extremely lucky. I would NEVER advise any expat to move around without his or her iqama. It is as though advising someone that it is okay to drink and drive because you were never caught by the police for drunken driving. Your advise for taking your passport for transfering money is also incorrect, because in the first place you wouldn't be in possession of your passport and secondly, it is now mandatory for banks to record your iqama information as well as to collect the photocopy of your passport with your sponsor's stamp. I would strongly advise readers to exercise utmost caution for your own safety and be law-abiding, rather than taking incorrect advice from people who do not know the goings-on, which would land yourselves into trouble. I live in this region for over 14 years and am more than a veteran.

@JutMe I think either you are on visit visa in Kingdom or you are from some big international company who dont take passport from employees but for lower and middle class guys it true that, they should have their iqama all the time with them as their passport is either with the company or with the kafeel.

First, you need to be hired by a company, school or university. The employer will file the papers for your visa and send the info to a agent in your home country. You cannot just get a visa to come here. Your employer must request a visa number for you from the Dept. of Education. This is the only to get a visa....esp being female.

Is it possible to travel outside Saudi Arabia if the iqama is expired. Because I have to leave in a week for university and my dad's company isn't green and having issues. As a final solution can I leave on final exit even if my iqama is expired, because going back is extremely important and I have paid my tuition fees and not attending uni will have dire consequences....so please give me your insight asap.

I'm a bit uneasy about surrendering my passport for so-called "safe custody". Surely I'm the safest custodian of my own passport? Is this obligatory or does it depend on the employer? Should employers who insist on keeping your passport be avoided? Also, is this equally common practice in other Gulf countries or is it a Saudi thing?

I arrived here last May and was issued a "waraga". It's a document which contains a photocopy of my passport and visa along with an arabic stamp of some sort along with a handwritten letter written in arabic. My problem is that my sponsor has not issued my iqama yet and my visa will be expiring in a few weeks. Would I be considered an illegal alien already? Should I worry about this or should I be content with the waraga until I get the iqama. I'm worried to death here and cant even sleep peacefully at night. It will be my first time to become an illegal alien if ever! My employer said that its just my luck that Ramadan came and people are feeling a bit lazy to do anything at work. The heck!

Hi I entered KSA on a single entry 30 days validity/30 days duration of stay visit visa on Friday 3 August 2012 (15 Ramadan 1433). Can someone please advise what the last date of my visit visa will be by when i must leave the country? Please advise the date in the Hijri and Gregorian Calendars. Is day 1 the date i entered (3 Aug) or the day following (i.e. 4 Aug)? I've made my flight booking out on Sun 2 Sep (15 Shawwal 1433). Is this the 30th day of my visa or will i have overstayed by a day? I'm unclear whether the 30th day is 1 or 2 Sep. This depends on when day 1 of the visa starts. If it is the date of entry, i.e. 3 Aug, then the 30th day would be 1 Sep. If the first day is the day after i have entered (i.e. 4 Aug) then the 30th day would be Sun 2 Sep. Please help???!!

Contact them via email, (microfinanceloan01@hotmail.com) Article Details You are here: Home > Article Details Iqama - Your lifeline in KSA by Expatguru - 02/28/2012 "This article explains what an Iqama is and how important it is for expatriates working in Saudi Arabia" The most important document an expatriate must possess at all times in Saudi Arabia is his ‘Iqama’.
