"This article gives an overview about Alfaisal University, Riyadh and the large number of opportunities available for potential teachers."
Among the first and probably one among the best private Universities in Saudi Arabia, Alfaisal University was founded in 2002 by the world-renowned King Faisal Foundation. Within a short span, its reputation has soared and is unquestionably among the top institutions in the Middle East.
The University has four major streams of study – Engineering, Medicine, Business, Science and General Studies. The affiliation list of the University reads like a virtual who’s who – Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), International Space University, Partners Harvard Medical International (PHMI), French Aerospace Company, Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), etc. The Colleges of Engineering, Business and University preparatory program are offered at undergraduate level, while the College of Medicine and College of Science & General Studies are offered at graduate level.
The College of Business specializes in Accounting, Finance, Project Management, Human Resources and Marketing. The College of Engineering offers traditional streams such as Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, Architectural and Software engineering. The College of Medicine offers a mind-boggling variety of specialities – from Microbiology to pharmacology to genetic counselling – that it could as well be a full-fledged University of its own. Finally, the College of Science & General Studies deals with Math, Physics, Chemistry, Humanities and also offers Master’s degree in Nanotechnology.
The University has set high standards for students to gain admission. Students who have studied in American curriculum, for example, need to score at least 98 out of 100 for being considered for Medicine and 90 out of 100 for other streams. Generous scholarships are given for those who are meritorious and in financial need, on a case to case basis.
There is corporate sponsorship for research and graduate studies by companies such as Shell and Boeing. A highly developed state of the art e-library helps students and faculty to be up to date. King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has a tie-up with the University for offering their hi-tech laboratories, research facilities and expertise. The programs of the College of Business are designed by French Aerospace Company, while that of the College of Business are modelled by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The University's faculty comprises of highly qualified and experienced teachers from various nationalities. Almost all professors are invariably doctorates with several years of experience, probably one of the reasons why the University is so well-respected in the Middle East.
Demand for seats is growing rapidly each year forcing the University to increase the number of seats. To maintain a healthy student-teacher ratio, there is a continuous demand for highly qualified and experienced teachers at any point of time. Both male and female teachers are actively encouraged to apply.
The University offers a generous package, totally tax-free. Standard contracts include housing and living allowance, annual tickets for self and dependant family members, dental and medical coverage. All visa charges are borne by the University. There are ample research opportunities for the faculty members.
For prospective teachers, an opportunity to work in this prestigious University would be both financially attractive as well as a satisfying experience.
