Article DetailsCan I Have a Social Life in Saudi Arabiaby Carol Fleming - 03/13/2010 "This article provides guidance on finding like-minded friends and establishing an active and enjoyable social life while living and working in Saudi Arabia as an expat." Depending on one’s expectations settling in, making like-minded friends and discovering things to do in Saudi Arabia may take longer than when one is working elsewhere. The reason for this is because much of the traditional western oriented activities in Saudi Arabia are organized and advertised by word-of-mouth. It is important to exercise caution when organizing events in Saudi Arabia which may be contradictory to the traditional culture and custom of Saudi Arabia. Not only could an event cause offense and be perceived as unislamic, but if the Ministry for the Protection of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Muttawa) became aware of such an event, they may make efforts to prevent and disrupt it. Many events will take place on western compounds which the Muttawa are prohibited from accessing or in the Diplomatic Quarter and at embassies. (4 Votes)

thank you very much.Mimi Monday 21 June 2010, 5:11 am Single women are not allowed (officially) in a car with an unrelated man EXCEPT taxi drivers, period. This alone makes it damn hard to have a social life by accepting rides to various events. If you are sporty, outside is fine until May when it hits 100 F virtually every day until October!
If you dance, you have to put up with chain-smoking and big drinkers. Plus, you can't hardly find any single men under age 45. ALL SOCIALizing as westerners know it requires being invited onto good 'compounds,' so networking is essential.
The Dharan/Khobar/Dammam area is blessed by proximity to open-minded Bahrain, lots of expats and therefore, lots of restaurants and supermarkets for us. Some ladies never wear abayas -- without trouble! Cool!Carol Fleming Sunday 27 June 2010, 12:48 pm Thank you all for the comments. I'm glad that you have found this article useful and informative. I will be happy to write future articles that continue to expand on social activities in the various regions of Saudi Arabia.

Is there anyone out there that would be interested in giving advice and ideas about living and working there. (We have a formal training program and orientation etc. however some staff really like to connect themselves.)saad abdallah |
